“The character of Ed Derby is an homage to one of my favorite Vonnegut characters with the same name, and the role was written just for Paul Molnar. Both are at the heart of their respective stories, and in the heart of my time here on earth. We became friends while working in a bar in NYC a long time ago, and now we each own bars in Brooklyn. He's one of the hardest working people you'll ever meet, and he's a really smart, generous actor with these mesmerizing, blue eyes that tell a story without even trying. His approach is supremely intellectual, while mine is mostly gut- which challenged me to really think about how different actors approach their characters. He's much more interested in the theater, but I wish he was in every movie."
